About Me
Background
Hi there! My name is Jhoany Chong. I am an Industrial Design major from San Francisco State University. I was born and raised in Panama. I grew up learning three languages: two in school, which are Spanish and English, and Cantonese by communicating with my family members. I moved to San Francisco to start my design journey in 2017, studying Fashion Design at City College of San Francisco for my first 2 semesters, but later changed my major to Graphic Design. After 3 years and completing my AA in Graphic Design, I transferred to SFSU to obtain my Industrial Design degree. I am in my last semester of this major, so I am looking forward to what the future holds for me.
Hobbies/Interests
In my free time, I enjoy watching anime, K-dramas, and various design shows. I also like attending festivals and hanging out with friends. Additionally, I find pleasure in crafting, occasional sketching, illustrating, and browsing Pinterest to gather motivation and inspiration for my creative projects. In the past, my hobbies included swimming, archery, judo, and jiu-jitsu. Among these, jiu-jitsu was my longest-standing hobby. I recently stopped training in 2022 after dedicating 4 years to it. Currently holding a purple belt, I hope to return to training someday.
I have interest in various design fields, such as fashion, interior design, graphic design, and digital design, among others. Apart from these, I also have a curiosity about technology, how products are made, coding, investing, and many other topics I'd like to explore. However, I must admit that I sometimes struggle with finding the time and motivation to commit to learning and expanding my knowledge—this is a personal challenge I'm working on.
Inspiration/Influences
Most of my inspiration comes from when I am... high. 😂 However, I often lose track of my thoughts and forget about the ideas I had in this state. Apart from that, I also draw inspiration from watching YouTube videos created by other artists and designers. These videos help me learn new techniques and perspectives. I'm particularly drawn to videos that focus on their small businesses, as I aspire to open my own business or studio in the future. One YouTube channel that has truly impressed me is NerdForge. I admire the immense effort they put into their projects and enjoy observing their creative process from scratch to finish.
Vision
My vision is to eventually establish my own design studio. However, before reaching that point, I intend to gain experience and enhance my skills. Despite having numerous interests, I am uncertain about the specific niche I would ultimately like to focus on.

Project Proposal
- Smart lenses: to translate audio to text from different languages. Ideal for traveling.
- Tissue Squeezer Massage: A squeeze massage device that can target deep tissues.
- Color Pen Indicator: A pen that tells you the HEX code of the color from any product such as fabric.
- Ice Pack for Ear: Cauliflower ears are common in the jiu jitsu community and majority of the ice pack are hard to reach the target area to ease the swelling.
- Clock Timer: As an designer, I find it hard to keep on track the hours of my projects. I would like to create a clock timer that can collect data of hours from different projects at the time.

Hello Jhoany! I love the "this is fine" meme dog reference! It's amazing that you can speak three languages from learning both in school and at home. As someone who also changed majors and is in her final semester, I commend you for achieving a degree in graphic design and going on to pursue a degree in industrial design. Your hobbies are also very interesting. Your comments about swimming and jiu-jitsu reminded me of when I was younger. I would go to Saint Ignatius for swim team practice and go to my dad's Kung Fu studio after school. I remember how fun it was to learn new skills, and moves and gain energy after feeling tired after a long day of classes. I hope your vision of creating a design studio comes true, you just have to see where the future takes you.

Hi Jhoany,
ReplyDeleteWe all have dreams and goals but you are not alone with being uncertain with where our dreams and goals will take us. In the mean time when can hone our skills and master our craft through experience. I believe that if you have the will and the drive, you will have that design studio that you dreamed of. Good Luck!
Hello Jhoany, i love the dog meme "This is Fine" its funny and relatable, it is really cool that you speak three languages. as someone who has also switched majors, i understand the excitement of almost finishing being in my last semester as well. i'm also hoping you open a design studio in the near future. can't wait to see what you'll create this semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Jhoany!
ReplyDeleteIt's been super interesting having you in some classes. You're a super capable person and it makes sense you have so many cool hobbies. It's been interesting to see how you channel that positive energy into your designs and I look forward to see what you work on for this class! Good luck!
Hello Jhoany! I'm so excited to see where this class and the overall project you'll be working on will turn out. You produce so very cool and innovative work, and i think whatever project idea you settle on will turn out amazing.
ReplyDeleteHi Jhoany! You always have been a really cool person and I think it is attributed to your openness to trying so many things. Your openness is definitely what makes you a great designer and I see you as someone who can almost do it all because you've tried so many things and programs. Overall I am super excited to see what you end up doing for this class!
